2 TIL 5 Youth Theatre Co-op was established in 1976 as a Saturday afternoon drama workshop (from 2 until 5) for young people. The company has steadily grown since then, providing drama skills workshops and original productions for people aged 8-18, giving young people an opportunity to learn about theatre and themselves.
In 1996, 2 Til 5 established Tantrum Theatre, an off shoot company, catering to emerging actors and theatre artists aged 18-25. Under the guidance of the company’s staff Tantrum established itself as a unique company in the region, producing innovative contemporary performances that appeal to the peers of those involved and the wider local demographic.
In 2004 the company’s staff, members and the Board of management reviewed the operation and position of 2 Til 5/ Tantrum. It was decided that it was appropriate for a merge of 2 Til 5 Youth Theatre and Tantrum Theatre. The decision to re-shape the company came as the result of a review of the company’s activities and image and from a desire for a much clearer direction.
The new company was named Tantrum Theatre and began its first artistic program in 2005.
Tantrum continues to be Newcastle’s leading theatre company for young people, providing bold and cutting-edge performances and the presentation of new works.
