Tantrum Theatre is currently seeking expressions of interest from designers/visual artists to undertake the role of Designer for a new production in 2012 presented in partnership with Australian Theatre for Young People (atyp).
Tantrum Theatre is a not-for-profit youth arts organisation that provides opportunities for young people aged 5-30 years in Newcastle and the Hunter region to participate in drama.
Tantrum nurtures young artists by providing opportunities for growth, risk taking and excellence through performance based training and activities in Newcastle, while linking these young artists with innovative arts programming with local and national arts organisations and providing the opportunity to work alongside professional artists.
Tantrum and atyp have co-commissioned one of Australia’s leading playwrights, Alana Valentine, to write the script Grounded. The production is a celebration of Newcastle, its unique location, the working port’s connection with the community, the river and the activities which are so vital to this town’s livelihood.
The storm causing the grounding of the Pasha Bulker on Nobbys Beach was a significant event for Newcastle in many respects, bringing the world’s focus to the city. Newcastle residents can recall the exact moment they heard the news of the grounding of a ship on a local beach. It was an event that excited and intrigued locals and visitors alike and drew people to explore the industrial port and the extraordinary situation that was so close they could almost touch it.
Working with the director, the designer of this exciting production will be given the opportunity to create a world on stage that represents this iconic Newcastle landscape.
Rehearsals will begin in January 2012 and the performance will be held at the Playhouse in Newcastle and the atyp Wharf Theatre in Sydney in May 2012.
Previous designing or accredited visual arts experience is required. A designer’s fee will be paid for the position.
Please email a cover letter and CV to Toni Main at ad@tantrumtheatre.org.au.
Expressions of interest must be submitted by 5.00pm 10 November 2011.
